Google Signs Its First Geothermal Energy Agreement in Asia

APRIL 25, 2025

Google has signed its first geothermal energy agreement in Asia, marking a significant step in the company’s global efforts to source clean energy for its operations. The agreement was signed with an Indonesian energy developer to support the company’s regional data centers with sustainable power.

The project, which will be located in West Java, Indonesia, is expected to generate 150 MW of clean geothermal electricity. This renewable energy will be used to meet the energy needs of Google’s data centers, helping the company move closer to its goal of operating entirely on carbon-free energy by 2030.

Geothermal energy, which provides stable and continuous power generation, is seen as a critical component of Google’s broader clean energy strategy. The deal reflects the company's commitment to regional sustainability and investment in long-term renewable infrastructure.

Google’s clean energy initiatives are part of a wider industry trend, as global technology companies increasingly prioritize carbon neutrality and environmental stewardship. The move also supports Indonesia’s national goals to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy technologies.
