United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio Highlights Strategic Importance of Caspian Interconnector for U.S. Interests

MAY 22, 2025

On May 20, 2025, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the strategic significance of completing the Caspian Interconnector during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing. In response to Senator Steve Daines' inquiry about the potential for transporting Turkmenistan's natural gas to Europe via Azerbaijan, Rubio affirmed that the United States views the project favorably, especially in the context of current global energy security challenges.

Rubio noted that despite reductions in foreign aid, funding for such initiatives continues through embassies and regional offices. He highlighted that the Caspian Interconnector aligns with the interests of the United States and its allies, offering an alternative energy route that bypasses Russia, China, and Iran.

The Caspian Interconnector, also known as the Trans-Caspian Gas Pipeline, is a proposed project aimed at transporting natural gas from Turkmenistan across the Caspian Sea to Azerbaijan, and subsequently to European markets. This initiative is part of broader efforts to diversify energy sources and enhance energy security in the region.
