Igdir-Nakhchivan Gas Pipeline: A Strategic Step in Regional Energy Security

JUNE 25, 2025

Azerbaijan continues to pursue a consistent and forward-looking strategy to strengthen regional energy security and establish resilient supply infrastructure. One of the most significant milestones in this direction is the completion of the Igdir-Nakhchivan gas pipeline, a key outcome of the energy policy spearheaded by President Ilham Aliyev.

The pipeline was developed under the framework of a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Azerbaijan and Türkiye in 2020. Entirely financed by the state budget of Azerbaijan, the project is managed and operated by SOCAR Midstream Gas Operations LLC (SOCAR MGO), a subsidiary of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR).

Spanning a total of 97.5 kilometers—80 km in Türkiye and 17.5 km within the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic—the pipeline enables the direct delivery of Azerbaijani natural gas to Nakhchivan for the first time, reducing reliance on energy exchanges and enhancing regional self-sufficiency.

This initiative marks a major step toward securing a stable and sustainable energy supply for Nakhchivan and optimizing the use of Azerbaijan’s national energy resources. As of December 24, 2024, all technical and regulatory preparations for gas transmission through the pipeline have been finalized, and the infrastructure is fully operational.

Beyond its local impact, the Igdir-Nakhchivan pipeline is a clear example of the deepening strategic energy partnership between Azerbaijan and Türkiye. The project not only reinforces bilateral cooperation but also contributes to the broader regional energy architecture.

As part of Azerbaijan’s long-term energy vision, the successful realization of this project underlines the country’s growing role as a regional energy hub and further cements its commitment to sustainable and secure energy solutions.
