Euronews Highlights the 30th Anniversary of Baku Energy Week

JUNE 27, 2025

Euronews has released a special report dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Baku Energy Week, an event that continues to serve as a major platform for global dialogue on energy issues. Held from June 2 to 4, the event brought together leading figures in the energy industry to address global energy security, sustainable development, and the energy transition.

In an interview with Euronews, Atsuko Hirose, Acting Secretary-General of the Energy Charter Secretariat, emphasized the continued significance of international cooperation and the need for universal frameworks. “I believe our agreement remains highly relevant. Major updates were made to it in December 2024, including the addition of new energy technologies such as hydrogen, ammonia, biogas, biomethane, synthetic fuels, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). These areas weren’t even on the radar three decades ago,” she noted.

Gauri Singh, Deputy Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), expressed concern about the slow progress toward the global target of tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030. She stressed that reaching this milestone will require annual investments of $1.5 trillion.

While recognizing the momentum in renewable energy development in countries like China, the U.S., and EU member states, Singh highlighted the critical importance of improving access to financing for developing and emerging markets.

“The coming decade will be decisive. It’s not only about scaling up renewables — we also need to strengthen power grids and build robust supporting infrastructure to meet carbon neutrality targets,” Singh stated.
