Ukraine Hails Strategic Milestone as Azerbaijani Gas Deliveries Begin via Trans-Balkan Corridor

AUGUST 06, 2025

Ukraine’s national energy company, Naftogaz, has announced the launch of Azerbaijani natural gas deliveries, marking a pivotal development in bilateral energy ties. In an interview with the Eastern European Bureau of Report, Naftogaz CEO Serhiy Koretskyi described the move as a "strategic step" toward long-term cooperation with Azerbaijan.

“This is the first-ever agreement for Ukraine to import Azerbaijani gas through the Trans-Balkan Corridor, and it signifies the beginning of a new chapter in our bilateral relations,” Koretskyi said.

Initial trial deliveries will follow the Bulgaria–Romania–Ukraine route, according to the company’s chief. While the volumes have not been disclosed, Koretskyi emphasized the symbolic importance of the agreement, calling it a “small but strategic” move that strengthens Ukraine’s energy security and opens the door to expanded cooperation in the future.

“This partnership helps diversify our energy sources, which is crucial for Ukraine’s resilience. We appreciate Azerbaijan’s trust and support,” he added.

The agreement was officially signed on July 28, 2025, between Naftogaz Group and SOCAR Energy Ukraine, a subsidiary of Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR.
