AREA: Azerbaijan to Integrate Nearly 2 GW of Green Energy into Power Grid by 2027

AUGUST 11, 2025

By the end of 2027, Azerbaijan’s power grid is expected to receive almost 2 gigawatts of green energy, Javid Abdullayev, Director of the Azerbaijan Renewable Energy Agency (AREA) under the Ministry of Energy, said at the opening ceremony of the Green and Digital Silk Road international acceleration program in Baku.

Abdullayev outlined three main stages for integrating renewable energy into the country’s energy system, noting that the first stage has already been completed. “We have identified suitable land plots, resolved network-related issues, and signed the necessary agreements — all based on scientific analysis. We believe that close to 2 GW of green energy will be connected to the grid by the end of 2027,” he said.

The second stage, he explained, focuses on unlocking Azerbaijan’s vast green energy potential. “Our renewable generation will exceed domestic demand, so exports will be crucial. We must enhance our export capacity and develop interconnectors to deliver this energy abroad,” Abdullayev stressed.

According to him, four interconnector projects are currently in the pipeline, with active work already underway. “Each of these projects aligns with today’s acceleration program. We are collaborating with the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport on optical components, and we are seeing significant progress,” he added.
