Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have held discussions on the progress of the "Azerbaijan–Central Asia" green energy corridor, a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing regional cooperation in renewable energy transmission.
According to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy, the issue was addressed during a recent meeting between Kazakhstan’s Energy Minister Erlan Akkenzhenov and Uzbekistan’s Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Bakhtiyor Ibragimov. The parties assessed the current status of the trans-Caspian green energy corridor project being developed in collaboration with Azerbaijan.
A key milestone in the project will be the launch of the joint venture “Yaşıl Dəhliz Birliyi” on July 1, 2025, which will drive the practical implementation of the initiative.
The sides also coordinated on the execution of bilateral energy "roadmaps" and reviewed progress on various joint energy projects. Special emphasis was placed on regional electricity initiatives, notably the development of the Kambarata-1 hydropower plant, which involves Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan as strategic partners.
Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close cooperation at the ministerial level to support all ongoing energy initiatives. Discussions also underscored the robust partnership in oil and gas, highlighting the uninterrupted operation of gas transportation systems. Notably, in the first seven months of 2025, Kazakhstan transited 921.7 million cubic meters of natural gas through Uzbekistan. Forecasts suggest that Russian gas supplies through the region could reach up to 11 billion cubic meters annually by 2026.
The “Azerbaijan–Central Asia” energy corridor is envisioned as a crucial segment of a broader energy bridge connecting Central Asia to Europe via the Caspian and Black Seas. The project aims to facilitate the export of renewable energy from the region to European markets.
