European LNG Imports Surge by 43% in July Amid Decline in Pipeline Gas Deliveries

AUGUST 21, 2025

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports to Europe saw a significant year-on-year rise in July 2025, reaching 9.08 million tonnes — a 43% increase compared to the same period in 2024, according to the latest data from the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF).

The surge in imports is primarily driven by increased demand for natural gas to replenish underground storage facilities, coupled with a continued decrease in pipeline gas supplies.

Among the countries leading the growth in LNG imports were the Netherlands, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Their rising demand collectively outweighed the drop in LNG deliveries to Türkiye, maintaining the continent’s overall upward trajectory in LNG procurement.

This trend reflects Europe’s continued shift toward diversified energy sources, as the region bolsters energy security ahead of the winter season.
