Baku to Host Inaugural "Go Net Zero Energy – Caspian and Central Asia" Summit

AUGUST 29, 2025

Baku will host the first-ever "Go Net Zero Energy – Caspian and Central Asia" summit on December 3–4, according to Globuc, as reported by Report. The event, themed "Unlocking the Region’s Clean Energy Development Potential," will bring together key stakeholders in sustainable energy and energy transition for critical discussions.

The summit will explore topics such as regulatory frameworks, infrastructure development, investment attraction, integration of renewable energy sources (RES) into power grids, innovative technologies for energy transition, and the potential for green hydrogen production. Azerbaijan aims to have one-third of its energy sector powered by renewables by 2027, while Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan are advancing legislative reforms and modernizing their grids. The event will emphasize regulatory incentives, tax benefits, and cross-border infrastructure projects.

Key examples include Azerbaijan’s Garadagh Solar Power Plant and planned offshore wind farms in the Caspian Sea. Discussions will also focus on energy storage, digital solutions, and hybrid systems to ensure a stable energy supply as RES adoption grows.

Green hydrogen will be a major focus, with challenges such as limited water resources, desalination needs, high production costs, and extensive infrastructure requirements under scrutiny. The summit will also address green hydrogen’s export potential, particularly the European Union’s growing interest. Azerbaijan plans to launch green hydrogen production in Sumgayit and aims to construct eight large-scale solar and wind power plants by 2027, with a combined capacity of 2 GW. These projects are expected to attract $2.7 billion in investments.

Once operational, these facilities will produce 5.3 billion kWh of green energy annually, increasing the renewable energy share to 32.6%, saving 1.2 billion cubic meters of gas, and cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 2.5 million tons. By 2030, Azerbaijan targets 6 GW of RES capacity, with 4 GW earmarked for export.
