Azerbaijan plans to commission two solar power plants (SPPs) with a combined capacity of approximately 530 megawatts (MW) in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic by 2028, announced Rana Humbatova, deputy director of the Azerbaijan Renewable Energy Agency (AREA), during the Azerbaijan & Central Asia Green Energy Week 2025.
Humbatova highlighted that agreements have been signed with Nobel Energy for a 30 MW SPP and with A-Z Czech Engineering for a 500 MW SPP aimed at producing electricity for export. The 30 MW plant is slated for commissioning later this year, while the larger 500 MW facility is expected to be operational by 2027.
Looking ahead, Humbatova outlined Azerbaijan’s upcoming priorities under the 2027–2030 Socioeconomic Development Strategy, which emphasizes “green growth.” Key objectives include strategic energy sector planning, expanding renewable energy utilization, establishing “green energy zones” and “green energy corridors,” integrating renewable energy with storage systems, enhancing energy supply infrastructure, and improving energy efficiency to support sustainable development.
