BP to Deploy Innovative BORIS System for Caspian Subsea Operations

OCTOBER 28, 2025

BP Azerbaijan is gearing up to launch subsea interventions at several wells in the Deepwater Gunashli section of the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea, the company confirmed to Report.

The initiative is designed to boost production, optimize reservoir recovery, and prolong the field’s operational lifespan.

A regional first, BP will introduce Oceaneering International’s advanced Blue Ocean Riserless Intervention System (BORIS) to its Caspian activities. This cutting-edge technology enables precise pressure management and early detection of production enhancement opportunities, unlocking additional field value.

Marking another milestone, the subsea work will be executed from a dedicated vessel rather than a traditional semi-submersible rig. The Khankandi vessel, integrated with the BORIS system, will serve as the primary operational platform.

BP has secured two multimillion-dollar contracts with Oceaneering International and SLB (Schlumberger) to support the project. Offshore operations are scheduled to commence by late 2025 and conclude by the end of 2026.
