“Vertical Gas Corridor” Energy Ministers to Meet in Washington at the End of February

JANUARY 30, 2026

At the initiative of Greece, the next meeting of the energy ministers of the countries participating in the “Vertical Gas Corridor” project — intended for natural gas supply to Southeast Europe and Ukraine — will be held in late February in the U.S. capital, Washington.

“Report” reports that this was announced by Greece’s Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou and Joshua Volz, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Europe, Eurasia, Africa, and the Middle East at the U.S. Department of Energy, during their speeches at the Athens Energy Summit.

The statements were disseminated by the forum organizers.

Joshua Volz emphasized that the project brings together countries that previously did not cooperate, and this is one of the biggest challenges: “The technical part, such as laying pipelines through mountains, is relatively easy. The most complex issue is convincing partners to make commitments. If the project is not commercially viable, it will not be viable for anyone.”

According to him, the coordination process stretching from Greece to Ukraine requires all participants to clearly see economic benefits: “This is not a charity project. The corridor is already operational, but right now only a few drops are flowing through it. We want to move to floods of gas.”

Volz announced that a ministerial-level meeting will be held at the end of February to discuss existing problems and advance the project. Consultations will continue intensively until the end of the year.

It should be recalled that the “Vertical Gas Corridor” initiative (Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine) aims to establish a route for gas supply from terminals in the Eastern Mediterranean to Moldova and Ukraine.

The project will enable the transportation of gas from Greece to underground gas storage facilities in Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Slovakia, Hungary, and Ukraine.

The supply sources will be Azerbaijani gas entering Greece via the Southern Gas Corridor and liquefied natural gas (LNG) delivered to Greece’s LNG terminals from various regions of the world.

Thus, the LNG terminal in Alexandroupolis, Greece, the modernized regasification station on Revithoussa Island, and the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) will serve as the main components of the “Vertical Gas Corridor.”
