President Ilham Aliyev: “We are making major investments in wind, solar, and hydropower

MARCH 12, 2026

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev spoke about the country’s strategic plans in the renewable energy sector during a joint press statement with European Council President Antonio Costa.

The head of state emphasized that one of the priority directions of energy cooperation is precisely the renewable energy sector, where significant potential exists.

“We are making serious investments in wind, solar, and hydropower. Our plan is to possess, in a short period — within five or six years — 6-8 gigawatts of export-ready renewable energy capacity. Currently, together with our European partners, we are intensively working on transmission lines, submarine cables, and other components of energy infrastructure,” the President noted.

Highlighting the sunny weather in Baku, he added: “Today, as you arrived, both of us remarked on the sunny weather in Baku. Spring is coming. In fact, our country has more than 300 sunny days a year — and perhaps even more windy days. Just imagine how great the potential of wind and solar energy is.”

According to the President, Azerbaijan’s rich natural conditions create a favorable foundation for the rapid development of renewable energy projects, and cooperation with Europe in this field holds strategic importance.
