President Ilham Aliyev stated during his speech at the opening ceremony of the 4th Shusha Global Media Forum that Azerbaijan has started supplying natural gas to Austria and Germany this year. According to him, this step is part of the country’s broader strategy aimed at strengthening Azerbaijan’s position in the European and global energy markets.
The head of state noted that Azerbaijan currently transports gas to 16 countries via pipelines and ranks among the world leaders in this field. He added that negotiations are underway with other European Union member states regarding both the launch of new supplies and the increase of existing volumes.
The President also announced that a special working program has been prepared to increase gas production and that an investment portfolio has been formed. At the same time, he emphasized that the implementation of renewable energy projects will make it possible to save natural gas. The goal is to increase renewable energy capacity to 8 gigawatts by 2032, which would allow the country to save 2–3 billion cubic meters of gas annually.
According to Ilham Aliyev, demand for Azerbaijani gas in Europe has increased significantly since the Russia–Ukraine war, and exports to the European Union have risen by 65% compared with 2022. For this reason, the expansion of the existing transportation infrastructure is considered essential.
The President stressed that one of the key issues is the conclusion of long-term contracts. He noted that Azerbaijan needs substantial investment to increase production and underlined that stable, long-term commitments are necessary to ensure the sustainability of energy cooperation.
In addition, Azerbaijan has begun exporting gas to new markets, including Syria, and is considering additional demand opportunities in the region. The President expressed satisfaction with cooperation with the European Commission and stated that the recent visits of EU leaders to Azerbaijan demonstrate the high level of development of bilateral relations.
