Kazakhstan considers alternative oil export routes amid CPC instability

AUGUST 10, 2026

Kazakhstan is evaluating the Baku‑Tbilisi‑Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, the Baku‑Supsa route, and transit across the Caspian Sea through Azerbaijan as additional options for oil exports in light of operational uncertainties surrounding the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC), Report informs, citing the Kazakh Energy Ministry's statement to Interfax‑Kazakhstan.

The alternative routes are being considered to ensure extra export capacity. Kazakhstan's national oil and gas company, KazMunayGas (KMG), plans to boost oil exports via the BTC pipeline by 31% in 2026 compared to 2025, reaching 1.7 million tonnes.

In the first half of 2026, Kazakh oil transshipped through the port of Aktau towards the BTC pipeline totalled 704,000 tonnes.

The BTC pipeline spans 1,768 kilometres and has an annual throughput capacity of over 50 million tonnes of oil.

The project's shareholders include SOCAR (32.97%), BP plc (30.1%), MOL (8.9%), TPAO (6.53%), Eni and TotalEnergies (5% each), Itochu (3.4%), ONGC Videsh (3.1%), and ExxonMobil and INPEX (2.5% each).
