Parviz Shahbazov: New realities create broad opportunities for regional cooperation

OCTOBER 01, 2026

At a time when global economic relations and supply chains are being reshaped and diversified energy and transport connectivity is becoming increasingly important, new realities in the South Caucasus are creating opportunities to expand regional cooperation, trade and investment.

Azerbaijan’s Minister of Energy Parviz Shahbazov made the remarks at the Azerbaijan-Greece Business Forum held in Athens as part of the sixth meeting of the Joint Commission on economic, industrial and technological cooperation between the governments of Azerbaijan and Greece.

According to the minister, Azerbaijan’s position as a reliable partner, together with its policies aimed at diversifying the economy and developing energy and transport links, logistics and digital infrastructure, has strengthened the country’s investment appeal. It was noted that the non-oil and gas sector accounts for more than 70% of GDP, while more than $350 billion has been invested in Azerbaijan’s economy over the past 20 years.

Shahbazov emphasized that Azerbaijan is interested not only in attracting capital, but also in establishing long-term investment partnerships that bring new technologies, knowledge and expertise while expanding production and export opportunities.

Energy, green energy, transport and logistics, the digital economy, industry and manufacturing, agriculture, food processing and tourism were highlighted as promising areas of cooperation for Greek businesses. Opportunities to expand the energy partnership established through the Southern Gas Corridor through green energy projects and new energy connections were also highlighted.

The growing importance of the Middle Corridor in transport and logistics was emphasized. It was noted that combining Azerbaijan’s strategic geographic position with Greece’s port and maritime capabilities could strengthen East-West connectivity and expand access to Mediterranean and European markets.

The parties also considered cooperation opportunities in the digital economy, artificial intelligence, data centers, digital infrastructure, industry and manufacturing. The Alat Free Economic Zone, industrial parks and modern logistics infrastructure were presented as opportunities for Greek companies to establish production in Azerbaijan and gain access to broader regional markets.

Greek businesses were invited to take advantage of Azerbaijan’s investment opportunities, participate in new projects and establish long-term partnerships. It was noted that the forum is expected to contribute to increasing mutual investments and expanding economic cooperation between Azerbaijan and Greece through concrete projects.

More than 90 companies from Azerbaijan and Greece participated in the business forum, organized by AZPROMO and Enterprise Greece. The event continued with B2B meetings between companies.

Shahbazov later noted that Azerbaijan’s investment opportunities had been presented during the forum, with particular attention given to prospects for developing business and investment cooperation in energy, green energy connectivity, transport and logistics, digital technologies, industry and other sectors.
