Chinese high-voltage power transmission technologies considered for Trans-Caspian Green Energy Corridor

OCTOBER 27, 2026

Green Corridor Alliance, the joint venture established to manage the Trans-Caspian Green Energy Corridor project, has signed a memorandum of understanding with China Southern Power Grid Company Limited International Co., Limited (CSGIHK).

The agreement aims to explore opportunities for developing high-voltage electricity transmission projects in the Caspian region, conducting joint research on cross-border energy infrastructure and assessing potential areas of strategic cooperation.

According to Tural Aliyev, CEO of Green Corridor Alliance, the memorandum creates a framework for expanding technical consultations, joint studies and engineering cooperation between the two parties.

The agreement was signed during Aliyev's working visit to Guangzhou, China, on October 21–24. During the visit, he held meetings with CSGIHK representatives and toured the Guangdong Suidong and Huizhou Longmen converter stations.

At these facilities, he was introduced to advanced technologies used in ultra-high-voltage electricity transmission and the integration of large-scale power systems.

Discussions with CSGIHK Vice President Gong Yu focused on potential business models, long-term partnership opportunities, technical support, the exchange of engineering expertise and ways to optimize capital expenditure (CAPEX).

Aliyev noted that cooperation with the Chinese company could help identify opportunities to apply China's experience in high-voltage electricity transmission to the Trans-Caspian project. The partnership could also contribute to strengthening regional electricity interconnections and developing strategic green energy corridors.

Green Corridor Alliance is a Baku-based joint venture established by Azerbaijan's AzerEnergy OJSC, Kazakhstan's KEGOC JSC and National Electric Grid of Uzbekistan JSC.

The initiative originates from the Strategic Partnership Agreement on the Development and Transmission of Green Energy, signed by the presidents of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan during COP29 in Baku on November 13, 2024. The agreement establishing the joint venture was subsequently signed on December 27, 2024.

On April 4, 2025, the three countries announced the launch of the initial phase of the Trans-Caspian Green Energy Corridor initiative with the support of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

The project aims to integrate the electricity systems of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan and establish a new transmission route for supplying renewable electricity to European markets.

During the initial phase, the countries agreed to prepare a feasibility study financed by ADB and AIIB.
